GOSSIPPY NOTES.

(FROM OUR WELLINGTON GOSSIP.) Journalistic amenitios are on the increase here. The Chcsterlield of the Wellington Press, better known to the vulgar herd as Bubbly Jock, has had a little difference - with one Chili Ghutnee, re some paragraphs written by the latter' for the.-New Zealand Sun. The said paragraphs contained some reflections on the late interesting press - libel case, Anderson v. Gillon arid others, and were apparently revolting to the fine oesthetie. feelings of our literary giant; for; on encountering the anything but fiery ; Chili in'the street the other day, Bubbly hinted at summary chastisement in language, not of the choicest Chesterfield type. The wary Chutnee has.sought' j the strong protection of:,,the law, j wisely, too, by the way, for there is no; . fiercer wild fowl than your Bubbly living \ [ and an interesting case will come on for hearing 10-mor-row. '.'.'■„/ A sad instance of commercial hardness of heart occurred here the other day. A ' young gentleman of the Harold Skimpole; type, being desirous of attending, a fancy dress ball, ordered a gorgeous pair cE understandings from a tradesman whop be had reason to regard'as soft enough fir his purpose. The eventful night arrive!: Behold the youthful Skimpole clad in/his rich array, and wanting only his boots! A . cab is despatched to the tardy son of Crispin, and, after an agonising interval, returns with a brown paper parcel. The tearing open of this is but the work of a second ; but, alas, the sight that meets the eyes of that poor youth! In lieu of the dainty encasements ordered, behold a pair of mouldy, musty, dew-beaters, of gigantic dimensions, and a tiny scroll bearing on its face the .'mocking legend, "once.bit, twice shy!" The poor youth stayed at home that night, and is now understood to be in pugilistic training with an eye to revenge. The Reeves enquiry still drags its slow . length along like one of Dickens chancery suits. I have no idea when it will conclude; but, as to the result, I believe it will be to retain Reeves in his position. Mr. and Mrs. Morton Tavares are. now playing at the Royal. I have seen them in •" Faust" and «• Richelieu." Tavares is a/ • ■ very good actor. His '• Mephistophills'',l • did not greatly admire ; but his" > : was a first-class performance. It wdsnoj, !■" on the whole, so great an impersonation's that of Hoskins, in that it lacked powen and impressiveness in some ;t)f the deplamatory passages ; but 1 ' the conception, make-up, bye-play, &c, were capital, and .' some of the business first-rate. I missed his Hamlet, but shall make a point of seeing him' next week as " Shylock" in the " Merchant of Venice." Business in Wellington is very lively, and expected to continue so for some time, there being three English ships,, besides Yankee and ordinary coasters, at present discharging. • & • *V Zodiac.
