REPORT OF AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD OVERSEER.
The following report was read and received from Mr. Barwiek,' Eoad Board overseer, at a late meeting of the Board. BOAD FROM BELL'S HOUSE, WAINUI, TO barry's bay. At Bell's slip pannel one new culvert is wanted, 20 X 5 x 2. As the stream is considerable at times, overflowing road, the present culvert is not sufficient to contain the How of water. About half a chain further a culvert wants lengthening, and the water tables want reforming the whole length, from Bell's to new school building. Below bridge, next to jetty, landslip to clear, culvert blocked. Behind C. McDonald'e, bridge in a very dangerous state. The road from thence to the top of Maori Hill totally impassible to foot passengers, but I consider it would be unwise to interfere with it till after the winter, as the expense would be out of all proportion to the good that could be done. What I would propose, would be to obtain permission to use the Bridle Path, just below, or joining it, on the top of the hill. All that is necessary to make this road practicable would be the making of a temporary bridge at the foot of the benching. By doing so, the whole of the above road would be avoided. Passing to junction of new road with bridle path running along the whole length to Knight's gate, side channels and culverts want attending to. From gate, till near Mr. Knights, the road is good, with the exception of a little clearing wanted. Under Mr. Knights, and around-the whole of the bight the road is bad. . Stonebreakers complained a
not leaving shfficient 'roadway, especially 1 * at night. After rounding on to the bluff of the hill, the road is good, till you reach French Farm flat, but in order to do any good at this place, the road must.be formed, but it would not be wise to interfere with it till the winter is over. The School Committee want to place a tank on roadside for the use of the school. I believe this would be a r benefit, as it would help to keep up the rotten bank, but, .at the same time they ought to have the ditch bottom te prevent any scour from outflow of water, and also to keep open culvert across gateway, adjoining. Passing to the junction of the Barry's Bay road, the sea wall is washed down for about three quarters of a chain, and wants rebuilding. From thence, and along by boat landing, it is very bad, in fact, I may say the same of the whole length of road to Barry's Bay jetty, the culverts and side drains being completely choked up, and in some places the mud wants scooping off, in order to make the work good, before filling in. aylmer's valley road. As regards this road, it would be unwise to do anything permanent, except repairing and opening culverts, and the side channels want attending to, where practicable, also a few bad ruts to fill in, in fact, to make a permanent job the road wants regrading throughout. Thehoundary culvert, if put in at the joint expense of the Borough Council and the Board, should .not be less?'than 25ft long, in order to meet the future widening of the road.
