In consequence of the illness o£ the Rev W. 11. Cooper, he was unable to take any duty in the outlying parts of the parish during the last week, and we are requested to say that he has been reluctantly obliged to give up all week day services until further notice. The Rev. D. 0. Hampton will take the services on Sunday next at St. Peter's Church, Akaroa, and at the Head of tli3 Bay, when special collections will be made for the respective Sunday schools. At the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, held in Dunedin, Mrs. Eeed, who was charged with manslaughter, the jury, after being locked up all night, came into Court at nine o'clock on Saturday morning-, with an intimation that there was not the faintest probability of agreeing. The Judge gave them to understand that he would have to lock them up again, when the foreman asked a quarter of an hour' s respite. At half-past 9 o'clock they came into Court, with a verdict of" Not Guilty." Mr. Justice Johnston said he hoped the case would be a warning , to others. The management of our local Ethiopians, favoured us the other evening "with a private view of their new stage appliances and di-op scene. The new scene has been carefully and artistically painted by Mr. BiDens, and is for a local production, a most creditable performance, the drawing , and perspective being , good. This body gives a performance next Friday, and from what we hear of the proposed perform ■ auce it will be well worthy of patronage. Mr. Shor.t still pushes the business of his office in the district, having secured the large number of 70 proposals since his arrival here. In another page will. be found an account of Mr. Short's work, in Oaiuaru and Timarii, which speaks for itself, Meetings will be held in Okain's Bay to-day, and at Pigeon Bay, on Friday, afterwards Mr. Short will give a final address in Akaroa before leaving , . The usual meeting of the Borough Council will be held to-morrow evening, at 7 p.m. • j In compliance with a numerously and inflnentiaJly.signed requisition His Worship the Mayor has called a public meeting of the inhabitants, to be held in the Town Hall, on Thursday next, at 3 p.m., to consider the question of a fire brigade for Akaroa. The much wanted and often called for completion of the Purau road has at last, we see, been taken in hand by the Port Levy Eoad Board. We trust that this time there will be no hitch in the matter, and that this much wanted road may be soon open to the public. We beg to draw public attention to a notice which appears in our advertising columns that any who are desirous of having their friends or relatives brought out here have now an opportunity. The Borough Council by advertisement draw attention to the fact that horses and carts will no longer be allowed to cross and cut up the footpaths. It is really too bad that they should be destroyed by a traffic they were not intended for, and we trust that the Council will be firm in bringing up offenders. The German Bay School is again vacant, and a fresh master is advertised for. We hope in the interests of education that the committee will soon be able to secure a writable teacher.

Mr T. W. Barker, hotelkeeper, Head of the Bay, has filed a declaration of his insolvency.
