AKAROA FIRE BRIGADE.
(to the editob op the akaroa mail.) Our old friend, John Sundowner again gave a hint about getting, up a Fire Brigade in Akaroa ; not only do I endorse his views but think, his ideas should be carried out. Sundowner suggests .thaff the Volunteers should be formed into a brigade, but I differ from in this, for more reasons than one. First, men forming a Fire Brigade should be men that well understand the construction of buildings. The Fire Brigade of London consist of men that have been in the building trades ; such men would be well able to enter any part of a building on fire by cutting away those parts most easy to obtain egress, without endangering their lives by reckless cutting away of parts that should remain, and many lives nave been saved by those knowing how" to work npon a building on fire. We have men enough men in Akaroa to take such parts, and others who would likewise assist in the brigade able to fulfil any part alloted them by their leader or captain. What is now needed is our leading gentlemen and storekeepers, to ask His Worship the Mayor to call a meeting, and to see what can be done in this laudable object. We have constantly proof before us of the necessity of establishing a Fire Brigade at once, in Akaroa ; and who amongst us, having property, but would gladly assist to get a engine, hose buckets, &c. Water is nearly available through the entire town. Let the meeting be called, and soon proof- will be given that willing hands are waiting to carry out the undertaking without any remuneration but the countenance of the inhabitants.—l am, &c, E. W. MOREY.
