The Licensed Victuallers petitioned the Bench to recommend the reduction of license fees. Kumar a, June 12. There has been a remarkably heavy downpour of rain during the last 24 hours. The Teremakau was flooded with surface water, and heavy floods are' reported throughout the district. The outward Christchurch mail could not proceed this morning, and returned to Hokitika. There was no mail to or from Grqymouth to-day. It is still raining: Greymouth, June 12. It has been raining heavily, and the river is high, with every appearance of a big flood. The steamer Wallace, in coming up the river, was caught by the current, got on the shingle bank on the north side of the stream, and is now in a dangerons position. ■■•..-. Dunedin, June 12. In the Police Court this morning, a man named Allen M'Rae, an engineer, was committed for trial for attempting to poison himself with laudanum. The Council of the University met this afternoon. The principal business was the consideration of Mr. Macandrew's resolutions to invite competitive designs for new building, to cost £17,000. He proposes to offer premiums of £250, £150, and £100. The matter was adjourned for a week, to enable members to study the Museum plans, the Rev. Mr. Stanford having moved an amendment, to build on a portion of the Museum site, with a view to assimilate the institutions as much as possible. Invercargill, June 12. At the Supreme Court, this morning, Fredk. Middleton, who was proved to be an old offender,, was sentenced to four years, with hard labour. Calderwood was found guilty cf assaulting with intent to murder, and sentenced to 12 years' penal servitude. The criminal sittings are not likely to close till.Thursday. Auckland, June 12. i On Sunday evening, a larg* robbery took place at the house of the Messrs Duder, at the North Shore, while the family was at church. Money, cheques, promissory notes, &c, to the amount of nearly £4500, were carried off. The Hon P. Whitaker has gone to the Thames with Mr. Pierce, Native Land agent. The rumoured object of the visit, is to try to arrange for the closing up of Native land purchases in that district. An inquest was held to-day, at Parnell, on the body of the late .Mr. P. Pilling, who was killed at football on Saturday. The Coroner, in summing up, pronounced the game only fit for savages, and a verdict " that deceased was accidentally killed, no blarae attaching to any person," was returned. A rider was added, that the rules of the game should be modified with a view to prevent similar accidents. - RUMOURS OF MAORI DISTURBAN3E. A rumour is current respecting an anticipated raid by Te Kooti upon the settlements in Poverty Bay District. The Defence Force was largely reduced lately, and it is rumoured that the Natives in that district are in traitorous communication with Te Kooti. The rumour causes an uneasy feeling, as it is at present unknown to what degree it is true. Rumours also prevail regarding the bounceableness of the Waikato Maoris since the reduction of the Defence Force there, and the exposure of the confiscation boundary from Alexandra to Cambridge. The recent great reduction of the Armed Constabulary in this district was a mistake. THE ILLICIT DISTILLATION \ CASE. Manuel de Fratz was fined to day £120, for having distilling apparatus on : his premises. Timaru, June 12. ! Edward Ryan, larceny, was sentenced to two years' hard labour. The case of Regina v. Friedlander, for rape, has occupied the Supreme Court the whole day. Mr. White with Mr. Hamersley prosecuted ; Mr. Joynt for the defence. The jury, after retiring for a few minutes, brought in a verdict of "Not Guilty," which the judge was of opinion they were quite justified in doing. Corneilus Toll, larceny of a £10 note, was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude. Waimate, June 12. A serious accident occurred this morning. A young man named Palmer was killed by a tree falling on him in the Waimate bush.
