Local Board of Health.

A meeting of the Local Board of Health was held immediately after, the meeting of the Council last Friday evening. All the members were present. Mr. WagstafE in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and signed. The Inspector reported that he h*d had several, complaints made in regard to butchers killing sheep ill with foot-rot, and asked the opinion of the Board what was to be done in the matter, as he was doubtful if mutton so killed came under the meaning of the law as being unfit for food. Mr. Watkins mentioned that he had recently seen sheeps-heads with maggots on the brain, and neither tßese nor the sort of mutton described by the Inspector could be healthy human food. It was ultimately agreed to ask the opinion of an expert in regard to the matter, and the Inspector was instructed to be guided by opinion received. The matter of F. Hahn's' stockyard and cess-pool alongside the creek at Mr. Roberts came again under the consideration of the Board. On the Inspector being asked who was the complainant in the matter, he refused to mention names, as it was not convenient for the despatch of public business that such should be mentioned. There was no douht the cess-pool part of the stockyard was illegal, and it, was resolved that Mr. Hahn be requested to remove his stockyard and cesspool within a month" of his receiving the notice.

The Inspector had again to report that the public school closets were in anything but a satisfactory condition, indeed it was impossible to keep them clean, as at present constructed. He would suggest the laying of pipes to low water mark as a remedy, but as a public officer, he could not allow the present state of things to continue. Before taking any steps in the matter the Inspector was instructed by the Board to again bring the matter under the notice of the School Committee, by writing to the Chairman. A member of the Board stated that much of the sewage complained of came from the police barracks. The Inspector was instructed to report on the matter. The Board then adjourned till next meeting of the Borough Council.
