Auckland, June 5
The Acclimatisation Society report that the salmon ova experiment is satisfactory. Fishhave been seen and caughf by the Maoris. Letters have been written to the principal chiefs, asking their protection for the fish.
Father Rice lectured successfully last night in aid of the projected Cathedral at Queenstown.
The inquiry into the wreck of the Feronia resulted in the suspension of Captain White's certificate for three months and the mate's David Young for one month.
Kaipara, June 5
The steam launch brought from Wellington is considered inefficient for the requirements of the port.
Wanganui, June 5.
The p. s. Tonganro was this afternoon sold to a Kaiapoi firm, for £900, by public auction. At the Licensing Court this morning all renewels w«re granted. One new application was refused.
Grahamstown, June 5.
The Rev. J. Hill was presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns at a public meeting. Last night Professor Fay was securely tied in the cabinet. It took him 35 minutes to free himself, and when he came out his hands were covered with blood, the ropes also being smeared, from a cut on his wrist, caused by his struggles to get out. The cabinet manifestations were dispensed with. The Professor was greatly applauded for his pluck. The dark seance business was gone through as usual. Fielding, June 6. The 1.30 train from Foxton to Fielding ran into a siding at Rechter, Hamstead and Co.'s sawmills, near Bannythorpe. The engine collided with a truck, and with the carriages, went off the rails. No passengers were injured, except the Fielding Constable, who was slightly hurt. The engine was damaged somewhat.
Wellington, June 5
The Town Belt, lease for 14 years was sold by auction to-day. There was a large attendance, and the bidding was spirited. Fifty-six lots out of sixty were sold, at an aggregate rental of over £50.00 a year. Prices ranged from 15s to £10 10s per acre. , Gre'ymouth, June 5.
A digger named Watson, working on the north beach, in the course of a drunken melee, : bit off the nOse of his mate named Williams, and then burned down the tent. Williams is in great danger, having been previously beaten over the head with,a billet of wood by the same party. Watson was committed for trial at the district Court.
Trial has been -made during the week of Joseph Kilgour's' patent gold-saving brush at the Golden Fleece Extended Company's works. • The trial was thoroughly satisfactory, the result being a saving of lOoz 12dwts of amalgam per week. Westport, June 6. At tlie Licensing Court yesterday, 34 applications for the town and district were all granted, except two new applications and three adjourned. The publican business is greatly overdone, the entire population being about 2000. Dunedin, June 5. Walker, the trance medium, gave a seance last night in presence of 50 people. He lectured on evolution, and those present say that the lecture "was an exceedingly able one. Arrangements are made for a public appearance.
The fire Brigade had a stormy meeting last night in the course of which they sought to vindicate themselves against the charges of incompetency and delay in dealing with the fire on the previous evening. One member said that the officers stood looking at each other, and he expressed the hope that in future the captain would not swear, but conduct himself as a gentleman.
