JURISDICTION—R.M. COURT.
(to the editor of the akaroa mail.) Sir, —In your issue of the sth inst., I was surprised to read your .remarks concerning a petition having been presented to the Minister of Justice for extended jurisdiction in the RM. Court, Akaroa. Now Sir, this petition was signed, by a great number of residents some months ago, when the business-like arrangements of the E.M. Court were hot known, and
now they are. I ask how can you, Sir, as an exponent of right and wrong say, that the department of justice can flatter the head of his department in this locality, for the way in which his department has been carried on. They have only to look at the case Regina v. Buchanan, and the pages of the depositions there teem with mismanagement and gross neglect of public duty; and yet we, the public, by your paragraph are led to believe that all is right, nay even in fact, that the head of the department is mirabile dictu satisfied. If such is the case, the sooner the Civil Service is culled .the better, and men of education and talent selected to fill positions, when. Bench and Bar may take a more elevated standard, than that exhibited in the case of Regina v. Henderson. I am, &c, • ■'. VIGILANS.
