Auckland, June 1.
During the recent visit of the Attor-ney-General, the new Native Lands Bill was finally settled. Mr. Whitaker's proposals were accepted nearly without objection. The Act of 1873 is to be repealed altogether, and the general scheme is to return to the policy of 1865, with amendments suggested by experience. The Government evacuates the land market, and leaves speculation to the public. Certificates are to be issued to owners, and they may sell or lease to whom they please at once. Mortgages are forbidden. The general idea of the bill is absolute freedom to the Maori in territorial rights, and absolute freedom of land from Government interference. The duty is to be 20 per cent ad valorem. Wellington, June 1. The Gazette to-night notified the approval of Her Majesty to Mr. E. Richardson's retaining the title of " Honourable" within the Colony of New Zealand. June 2. Captain Fairchild reports the existence of the following dangers in Dusky Sound not marked in the Admiralty chart:—Facile Harbour : A ledge of rocks with about nine feet of water on it, centre of entrance to cove in northeast side of Facile Harbour. Duck Cove : A sunken rock on eastern side, distance from Porpoise Point about onethird of a mile west by north, with about six feet of water on it at low water. Blenheim, June 1. An important decision has been given in the Revision Court by District Judge Broad. He rules that the onus of proof of disqualification lies with the objectors. Ten appeals have been lodged. Dunedin, June 1. The Taieri Council to-day resolved to abolish toll-bars in that district. The Customs revenue collected at the port of Dunedin for the past month was £28,871. For the corresponding month of last year it was £30,900. During the month of May 58 deaths--136 births, and 41 marriages were registered in Dunedin.
