AKAROA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Akaroa School Committee, was held last evening in the school-room. Present— Messrs Penlington, (Chairman), Sims, Dalglish, Missen, Annand, and Bruce.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
CORRESPONDENCE. . A letter was read from Mr. Nicholls, the master, asking the Committee for more teaching assistance, also holidays at midwinter, and offering to take full charge of the cleaning of the school at £25 per annum. . A letter was received from the Secretary to the Board of Education, requesting the master to come up to Cliristchurch for examination in June. • A letter was received from a branch of the Akaroa Good Templars, applying for the use of the school-room for Lodge meetings. Tenders were received from the following persons for cleaning the school and closets. H. Edmondson, closets only, for £14 per annum. From Mr. Edmundson, the school, only at the rate of £2 per month. From Gγ. Ward, closets only, at £1 per month. Mr Sims moved—That Mr. Nicholla offer to do the whole cleaning for the sum of £25 per annum be accepted," and that an agreement be entered into with him from this date. Seconded by Mr. Bruce, and carried. Mr. Dalglish moved—That GL Ward be advised that the Committee now consider that the agreement with him is at an end. Seconded by Mr. Missen, and carried. The Committee resolved not to notice the breaking of a large pane of glass by E. Brown. It was agreed to reimburse the master 4s. paid for cutting firewood. The Committee resolved that the school be closed for the mid-winter holidays for a fortnight, from 18th inst.
Mr. Sims moved—" That the Chairman communicate with the Board, and request authority to advertise for an assistant male teacher." Seconded by Mr. Missen, and carried. The application of the master for the use of the school-room, to be used for entertainments, the proceeds to be devoted to a prize fund, was granted. The Chairman. read a communication from the committee of the Society for promoting the practice of economy in the schools of the colony.
The application of a branch of the Good Templar body to use the school-room as a lodge-room, was declined.
Mr. Sims said they acted for the Government, and as the buildings were insured at their expense, the Committee should not come into competition with the Town Hall, Oddfellow's, and Maonic Hall's.
The Chairman read the Inspector's last report of the examination of the school on 11th April last. The following accounts were forwarded to the Board for payment. £ s' d J. Billens, glazing and contract... ... ... 15 10 7 Mr. Sims suggested that the Chairman write to the Board of Education, asking them that in the event of the Kesident Magistrate's Court being changed, to secure the site for increased playground.
