Grass Seed is only coming forward in small parcels, and clean samples of ryegrass are worth 4s 6d to 4s 9d. Cocksfoot is entirely out of growers' hands, and holders are asking 6d to 6d£l Potatoes still continue to be sent away in large quantities to the North Island and the neighbouring colonies. Prices have improved somewhat, and good lots command 42s 6d, while, under exceptional circumstances, considerably over that figure has been paid. Dairy Produce.—-Cheese is worth 6d, while butter has receded in value. Holders are anxious to sell at lOd to 10£ d.
Flour. —Millers report a good business. Value the same as last week. The orders received for bran and sharps are more than they can supply.
Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the live Btock market, &c, for the week ending Friday, May 20, as follows :—At the yards on Wednesday, 262 cattle, 6038 sheep, and 112 pigs were entered for the week's supply. The saje was spiritless throughout, especially for cattle. The trade having ample supply on hand, declined to purchase except at a reduction in values, consequently the bulk pf fat cattle were turned out unsold. Our'enteries for the day comprised 181 head of cattle, 3373 sheep, and 112 pigs. In cattle, we disposed of only £700 worth, being chiefly fat stock of extra prime quality,' light weight, springing cows, and young stock. There was a drop in values for all classes of stores of fully £1 per head. In sheep, we topped the market for the season with a choice line of the Hon. E. Gray's Leicester wethers 2 tooth, at 15s 3d per head ; and sold 199 merinos at 9s to 9s sd, and 99 cross-breds at 12s6d;to 12 9d.for Mr. Geo. Holmes ; 263 crpsirbreds at 12s for Mr. J. Hurse, Mr. Chiajiall's at 10s, Messrs Bruce and Coe's at 8s to 10s per head, Mr. Henderson's at 10s to IJ.S 6dj-Mr. Duncan's at 9s, Mr. H. Maddison's.to and sundry lines of merinos at from 3s 6d to 4s 6d and 5s per head for various owners, also crossbred lambs good at 8s .'per head, Wool, Sheepskins, Hides, Tallow, &c, &c.—At our usual weekly auction on Thursday, a good attendance of buyers was present, arid sales made were' satisfactory. We catalogued 2684 sheepskins, 200 hides, several casks of tallow, and a quantity of rough fat. We. sold best butchers' crossbreds at from 4s, 4s 3d, 4s 6d to 5s 3d to 5s 5d each ; second quality, "3s 3d, 3s 6d, to 3s 9d j merino, good* from 2s 6d, 3s, to 3s 5d each ; second and inferior, Is 8d to 2s each. Wool skins,'"to 5s 3d each. Salted hides, 4{d per lb ; green, withdrawn at 3fd ; calf sold at 6d. Cask station tallow, discoloured, at 2Ad per lb ; cake tallow, 3d to 3£d per lb. Rough fat in bags, 2d to 2£d per lb. At Tattersall's, ou: Saturday last, we catalogued 126 horses of various descriptions, of which number we disposed of a fair proportion at about late rates. The demand for superior heavy draught stock continues good with only a few coming to hand. *
