PRESENTATION TO HENRY PEARDE ESQ., M.D.

On Saturday evening a deputation from the Akaroa Hope Lodge, 1.0. G.T., waited on Bro. Dr. Pedrde, to present .him, on be- ~ half of the brethren and sisters of the Lodge - , with an illuminated address. The deputation consisted of Bro. Clements, D.D.G-. W.C.T. Bro. Harlock, D.G.W.C.T. Bro. Penlington, P.W.C.T. Bro. Sigley, W.V.T.** Bro. Bruce, W.C.T. The address was a very beautiful specimen of illuminated penmanship, and was executed by Mr. Goodman, of Christchurch. On behalf the Lodge Bro. Harlock made the presentation, in doing which he said how much, he felt the honour the Lodge conferred upon him by asking him to present the address to Bro. Pearde. He looked upon the presentation as a simple act of duty due from the order to a brother who was one of its most active and energetic members. He hoped, and lie was sure his brothers and sisters in Templary joined in the hope that a change to another climate would have a good influence on Bro. Pearde's health, so that he might long be spared to continue the many works of usefulness which have characterised his life during his residence in Akaroa. He would now present to Bro. Pearde an illuminated address, as ; a token of the esteem in which he was held by the brothers and sisters of the" Hope Lodge. The address was then read by Bro. Karlock, Akaroa s Hope Lodge, 104, May 26th, 1877. To Bro. Henry Pearde, M.D. -■ :

' Dear Sir and Bro.—lt is with feelings of sincere regret we have to bid you fare-# well.. During the time you have been amongst us you have used your influence to the utmost in advancing the cause of Good Templary amongst us and the district. In the office of P.G.W.aTT which you have held in our Lodge; you have discharged your duties with credit to yourself, your every action being at all times carried out in the true spirit of our order, Faith, -Hope, and Charity. As D.G.W.C.T. you exercised an influence for good which we earnestly hope will be maintained. We beg you will accept this address, hofior its intrinsic merits, but as a memorial of our fraternal feeling. Wishing you every success and a kindly welcome wherever your lot may be cast, we are dear sir and Bro. yours fraternally, Alfred King Harlock, D.&.W.C.T.. for the Committee.

Bro. Pearde apologised for not having a written or prepared answer to the address ready ; his time had been so fully occupied and his health so b«d, that he really could* not prepare a speech for the occasion. Hβ begged to thank them for the very beautiful address that had been presented to him. It would have been impossible to,, have chosen any souvenir thalwould have been more acceptable to him. * He would hand it down to his son, and he earnestly hoped it would influence his young life. There was, indeed,- much to- be proud-of in the growth of Good Templary in the district. When the. Hope .Lodge was started it was with difficulty that a, sufficir ent number could be found to open the Lodge. It had been the custom to make a laughing-stock of the Good Templars of Akaroa, but now he was happy to say they constituted a body that would, should occasion require, make itself felt and feared. He had always done his best in the interests of the order, and he hoped* the Lodge would always work with that love and harmony that should at all times characterize Good Templars. He begged the deputation would convey to h# brothers and sisters his thanks, both for the presentation and for their good wishes for his fnture welfare. The deputation then withdrew."
