ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
[We are at all times ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.]
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. g lß __Will you allow me a short space' to endeavour to remove an idea which appears to prevail in the mind of the publici.e., that I have the " control " of the sums which were voted for special works on the Peninsula, and which now lies to the credit of a Trust Fund in the Bank of New Zealand. I have already received application for portions of these sums from two Road Boards, and I note in your Issue of Tuesday that I am about to be applied to for the same purpose by a third.. This money was deposited by the Government for the carrying out of these works, and was to be operated upon by the Chairman of the County Council for the time being, and by an officer to be appointed by the Government. A majority of the Council having decided not to carry out its duties, any action must emanate from the Government, and my
object in calling the meeting' of the 21st March,, was that the wishes of the electors might be made known in the proper quarter, and that prompt steps might be taken to carry out the several works for the benefit of the district.
I am, &c, E. C. LATTER. Barry's Bay, 17th May,. 1877.
