At the saleyards, on Wednesday, 4690 sheep and 348 head of cattle came forward The bulk of the sheep consisted of from fair to medium quality fat cross-breds, for which description the biddings were spirited, and a slight improvement on last week's prices was obtained. Fair quality fat cross-breds sold at from 8s 6d to Us each, and good to as high as 12s Gd. In fat merinos one or two fair quality drafts were offered, and realised from 7s Gd to 7s 9d per head. The cattle yarded consisted chiefly of well grown good conditioned stores, and for this class seA-cral lots which did not reach the owners reserves were passed in. Calves and yearlings in good condition tioltl at from £3 to £4 17s 6d each. For bust quality beef, 27s Gd per lOOlbs was obtained.
Messrs TT. Matson and Co. report on the live stock market, &c, for the week ending Friday, May 11, as follows:—34B head of cattle, 4GGS sheep, and 94 pigs, were penned oil for the week's supply. There was a moderate attendance, and although _ the rates obtained were satisfactory, biddings came very slowly, and the sale was -a drag throughout, especially for inferior classes of cattle. Our entries for the day comprised 200 head of cattle, 2G32 sheep, and 42 pigs. In cattle we sold GO head of fat cattle°for Mr. M. Jones at £9 Gs Gd per head ; 20 head for Mr. Ferguson, at £8 2s (id per head ; 30 head to Mr. G. Kinley, ai from ,£4 17s 6d to £7 and £9 per head; and 50 head, for various owners, at from £3 10s to £G 15 per head. In sheep we sold 150 prime and cross-breds at lls Gd to 1 Is 9d for Mr. K. Gillet; 220cross-breds-and merinos, at from 5s to 13s, per head, 500 merino, wethers, at 7s 9d per head, 313 crOoS-brails and merinos, for Mr. 11. Maddison, at for merinos 7s Gd to 7s 9d ; crosa-breds, at 9s to 10s Gd per head ; 293 crosa-breds, at 5s 10d to J)s 9d for Mr. (>. K. Jyblin ; 411 merinos, 5s 3d to Gs Gd, for Mr. Metcalf and sundry lines for various owners at market rates. Iα pigs, we sold 4.2 at 10s 6d, 13s, 245, and 275, oach. Country sales.—On Tuesday we held a clearing sale for Mr. Crowe, at Lincoln. There was a good attendance, but biddings were dull throughout the sale. On Thursday, .it liiccarton, wo held a sale for ?,Ir. Earnshaw ; biddings were brisk. Milch cows reached £20 per head. Wool, sheepskins, hides, and tallow. —27G0 sheepskins several bales of wool, a quatnity*of tallow and hides were catalogued. At the opening of the skin sale, biddings come slowly, but towards the middle of the .sale to the. end competition was keener and fair prices were obtained. The quality of the sheepskins offered was very superior the butcher;;, cross-breds being of excellent growth. We sold best large sized, 4s, -is Id, 4s Gd to 4s lid each ; second very good. 3s Gd to 3.3 lid ; ordinary, 2s Gd 2s 9d, to 3s ; merinos, 2s, 2s 3d, to 3s ; second and inferior, Is Gd to Iα 10 each ; hoggois. y.3 Gd to 3s each ; country skins at full rates ; salted hides passed in at 4d per 3b ; green, 3|d per lb ; calf f;old at Gd ; rough fat from 2|d per lb ; the wool to hand being only of ordinary merit, realised accordingly. Hams and bacon Cheese and butter— .market stocked with local. Wellington, May 11. Colonial flour, which is described as scarce is quoted at £lGlOs joats, 3s to 3s 3d ; bran, Is. Hams and bacon, 9d to 10d. Chftose, 7d to Bd. Potatoes, £4 to £4 ss. Tollard, £7 IDs. Dunedix, May 11. Wheat has advanced during the past v/cek, anil in now quoted at 5s Gd to Gs : prime samples of ordinary are 5s to 5s 3d ; inferior millers, 4s Gd to 4k yd. Oats, old, 2b 0d to 2s 8d ; new 2s 4d to 2s Gd. Barley, prime, 4«. Gd ; ordinary, 4s. ■ Messrs Cargills, Gibbs, and Co., have received the following telegram from Heljnuth, Schwartzo, London, dated London
May 8 :—The sales opened .with large attendance of both home and foreign buyers. Competition is fairly animated, but prices for fleece, washed and scoured woolsj show an average decline of l£d to 2d per lb, and greasy of a Id per lb on closing rates of last sales. , .
