OKAIN'S BAY ROAD BOARD.
-r,*. Thej usual monthly meeting of this Board was held in the Library, Okain's Bay, on Saturday, April 28th. Present — Messrs Barker, (chairman), Boleyn, Sefton, and Webb.
Previous to the ordinary business of the meeting being proceeded with, the Chairman made a short statement to the members, showing the position in which the Board stood with the County Council, and quoted clearly from statistical information which he had obtained at some trouble in support of his argument.
This was considered very satisfactory, and the Board thanked Mr. Barker for his valuable information.
Mr. Barker then said that he was not present at the meeting in the Town Hall, Akaroa, on the 21st, but his attention had been called to what he considered a most unfounded attack on the character of the clerk of the Board, and in fact all other clerks of Road Boards, but the truth was the. various Road Board clerks had quite enough to do if they did their duty, and so long as they did that, the Boards ought to support them, and not allow ignorant men to slander them unjustly. Mr. James waited on the Board, and asked permission to fall some trees on his fencing line, on Laverick's Bay road. The request was granted. A letter was read from Mr. John Moffat re survey of his land in Laverick's Bay. In reply, the Chairman stated that this was a source of frequent annoyance to the Board, as although ever so willing to construct new roads, it was entirely out of their power to do so until the land was surveyed, and moved—" That the clerk write at once to the Surveyor-General, pointing out the urgent necessity of an immediate survey of the land in this dis trict, some of it having been paid for years ago and not yet surveyed.
The motion was seconded by Mr. Boleyn, and carried.
Mr. John Moore called the attention of the Board to the dangerous state of the bridge on the main road to Duvauchell's Bay, near his house. Mr. Sefton was requested to go with the clerk and examine the same, and report to the Board, so that it may be put in order at once. Mr. T. Ware requested the Board to clear the road to his property on the East Heads, and as this was considered reasoni able, Mr.' Sefton received instructions to attend to the matter along with Mr. Ware, and if not to cost too much, to get the same done. The clerk then handed the Chairman a schedule properly filled up, showing the amount of rates levied in the district from 31st March, 1876, to 31st March, 1877, which required his signature before a Justice of the Peace. This Mr. Barker undertook to do, and forward the same to the Colonial Treasurer. - The clerk mentioned that this should have been done before, only the Chairman was away from home, and he could not procure his signature. The following tenders were then opened for benching road from Le Bon's Bay to Okain's Saddle:— James Barnet, 13s. per chain; W. P. Hartstone, 12s. 3d. per chain; Oliver Evans, Bs. per chain ; David Roland 16s. per chain ; John Moffat, alternative tender, 14s. and 20s. per chain ; C. Christison, lis. per chain; John Truman, 6s. per chain. Accepted. The following accounts were then passed for payment:— £ s. d.
