HONOUR TO WHOM HONOUR IS DUE.

SO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —Allow me to supplement the report of the proceedings of the Masonic Banquet, which appears in your last ssue and which is very incomplete. Of course it cannot be expected that every toast and speech should be reported in full, but I would wish to supply an omission which will have the effect of giving •■ honour where honour is due." I allude to the toast of the " Retiring and past officers of the Lodge, " Akaroa," coupled with the name of Bro. Dr. Pearde." In, proposing this toast while paying a very high tribute of praise to the way in which the first, officers performed duties that were new to them, and the regularity of the attendance of gome particularly, the S, W. (Bro. Scarbrough), still I could not but say that Bro. Pearde was the most energetic and zealous mason I had ever met, and that it was mainly his zeal and constant exertions, and finally his providing us with a place of meeting that enabled us to open a Masonio Lodge in Akaroa. In speaking in support of this toast, Bro. Fenton strongly supported the remarks made by me and added his testimony to the very great services that had been rendered by Bro. Dr. Pearde to Masonry generally and the Lodge, '• Afetroa," in

particular. Bro. Fenton expressed his extreme regret that ill-health would prevent Bro. Pearde continuing in Akaroa, and wished him success and prosperity wherever he went; sentiments in which all present most heartily concurred. What I felt about Bro. Pearde's case was this, that I apparently received a great deal of praise, and that no one else had clone anything worth mentioning, whereas really the reverse is the case. Ths smaller mede of praise is due to me, by far the greater to my past officers, especially Bro Pearde. I am, &c, W. H. COOPER, W.M. April 28th, 1877.
