Auckland, April 18
Malcolm Barley was fined £4 for driving 50 sheep to the Junction Yards. Defendant said that he purchased 1000 sheep at Taranaki from a person who guaranteed them free from scab, and had paid 6d per head for inspection on landing. The Australia, with the San Francisco mail, arrived this morning, making the quickest passage on record, namely, 22 days, 9 hours. She left San Francisco a day late, and made the voyage in three days under contract time. She left Auckland on Feb. 15, arriving at San Francisco on March 8 at midnight, the actual steaming being 21 days 2 hours ; left San Francisco, on March 28, at midnight ; actual steaming to Auckland 21 days 4 hours. New Plymouth, April 20. The s.s. Taranaki has gone back to the :-.anakau to fetch the Englich mail. She calls nowhere, but goes direct to Wellington. A banquet is to he given to Major Atkinson about May 1. Timaru, April 20. THE WRECK OF THE ISABELLA RIDLEY. Last night the mate and sailors of the Isabella Ridley tried to get off to the wreck to save their etfects. One man was drowned, and several others were only saved by the police rescueing them. The mate and one seaman were brought before Mr. Wakefield, J.P., this morning and discharged with a severe caution. The barque broke up during the night, the sea has abated. Dunedin, April 17. The drying kiln at Anderson and Co.'s flour mill, was destroyed by fire last night. The premises were fully insured in the Standard and New Zealand offices for £4000.
