HOUSES OF ACCOMMODATION ON THE CHRISTCHURCH ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —It is an unpleasant duty to have to complain of anything, but in the interests of the travelling public I do feel that the public houses on the Christchurch road are open to great improvement. There is an air of discomfort about them, and the meals and attention are anything but what travellers have a right to expect. It is impossible io help seeing that ever} r thing is sacrificed to the interests of the bar tippler; the ordinary sober traveller is not a welcomed guest. It is those that go in with a cheque to lamb-down that receive the smiles of mine host. He is looked after, and his every want attended to. I called at a house the other day ad ordered a glass of beer; I was told tatn

must take a bottle at two shillings cost: I mildly remonstrated that I could not afford two shillings, and that I thought the landlord ought to keep draught beer for the accommodation of those who prefer to keep their brains intact. I was put off with a sneer and had to be content with putting my hands in my pocket and paying this exorbitant charge. lam glad to hear that a house of accommodation is being erected at Little River, which will prevent travellers being driven to a house, where neither civility or one's requirements are supplied. I send my card for anyone curious to peruse.—Yours, &c, TRAVELLER.
