LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the office, Kaituna, on Monday, the 2nd inst. Present— Messrs Buchanan (chairman), Coop, Gebbie, and Parkinson. The clerk reported the completion of sundry repairs to culverts and other works on the Christchurcli road ; also on the Lincoln and Greenpark road ; also the fixing of a temporary groin above the upper bridge at Little River, and work in progress in Port Levy Valley road ; also that he had given the required notice to the sawmill proprietors about the sawdust without any visible result. Ordered that if immediate steps be not taken to abate the nuisance that the matter be placed in the hands of the police. Messrs G. Smith and J. Christie having offered to clear one mile and a-half of the Port Levy Valley road to a width of 20 feet, on condition that they be allowed the timber, the Board concluded, that on account of the uncertain position of the line of road that the work be postponed for the present. A letter was received from Messrs Miles and Co., Christchurch, relative to the drainage of the township of Epworth, aud stating that the fact of the township not being yet dedicated need not interfere with the progress of any drainage the Board might contemplate.

The clerk was instructed to communicate with the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board in reference to some correspondence that passed in 1873-4, relative to the boundary line between the two districts. It was resolved to widen and otherwise improve about 4 or 5 chains of road in Little River bush near Mr Coop's sawmill ; also that 6 or 7 chains near the spring at Ahuriri be repaired and metalled. Mr. Thomas Leatham attended with the view of inducing the Board to alter the specifications for his various contracts, so as to reduce the labour about one-third. The modest request was not complied with, upon which he lost his temper and emptied the vials of his wrath upon the clerk, who he evidently looked upon as the cause of all his troubles. There being a difficulty amongst the metal contractors, the Board, after hearing the various arguments, for and against, succeded in effecting an amicable arrangement between the parties. It was decided that in consequence of the snbsidies under the new Act depending on the rates, to give public notice " That all rates not paid by the 30th inst., will be sued for." Sundry payments were made prior to adjournment.
