At the Resident Magistrate's Court, held at Little Eiver, on Wednesday, March 31st, bjfore J. Aylmer, Esq., E.M., and Hugh Buchanan, Esq., J.P., Gr. Stanbury, G-. R. Joblin, J. R. Gilliat, S. Laney, H. Tawha, J. Tabuk, E. J. Akaroa, L. and J. Karorona were charged with permitting cattle to wander at large. The Bench, after cautioning the defendants to take better care of their cattle for the future, dismissed the cases. The s.s. Taranaki, advertised to sail from here this evening, for Port Chalmers, will riot call, in consequence of having the English mail on board. The Taupo, will, however, call here in her place on Wednesday next, the I lth April. In a late issue we gave an abstract vacation of the rateable property within the Okain's Road District, and stated that the rate levied svas Gd per acre, whereas it should i-iave read sixpence in the pound. At a meeting of the Christchurch Jockey Club, it Avas resolved that the mare Rosy Smart, late Blackbird, late Waterhen Lilly, should be disqualified on account of fraudulent entry," from ever running where the C.J.C. rules are in force. Mr. Baker's Hibernicoriis advertised to be exhibited at Barker's" Hotel, Head of the Bay, to-morrow evening. As the artistic representations of Irish scenery, as poitrayed on canvas, have been well received throughout the colony, we have no >-#oubt but that the-exhibition will be well attended. As an additional attraction, Mr. and Mrs. Baker will sing- several popular ; ball ads;- .,- We are glad to be able to report that ilr> H. '#iper, who for several days past "has been seriously indisposed, is now appioaching convalescence. Mr. R. A. Buchanan, late Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court here, on being arraigned at the Supreme, Court Sittings yesterday, pleaded " Not Guilty" to the three indictments. It will be seen by advertisement in another column that Baker's Mirror of Ireland will be exhibited for the last time on Tuesday evening next, at the Town Hall. The contractors (Messrs Sigley and Dicksorr) for the formation of Church and; Au-brey-street's and Bruce-terrace are making good progress with the work, and already the streets are beginning. to. present a. marked improvement. In the course of a few days, the footpaths will be completed, when wayfarers will be able to traverse those thoroughfares in all seasons with comfort. There have been no Courts held in Akaroa this week, owing, we presume, to the absence of the Resident Magistrate and Clerk, who have been called to Christchurch to attend the Supreme Court in the capacity bf Avitnesses. Mr. E. W. Morey has left at our office a tile, taken from his artificial oyster bed; German Bay. The face of the slab is literally covered with the bivalves, varying in age from a few days to a year old, the flavour being excellent. The demand for oysters throughout the colony has considerably increased within the past year or two, and as Mr. Morey purposes opening his bed in the course of a few weeks, he may rest assured of securing a good and profitable market for the molluscs. The usual monthly meeting of the Akaroa School Committee, was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs. W. Penlingfcon. (chairman), Bruce, Rodrigues, Noonan, Dalglish, and Checkley. A letter was received from the Inspector of Nuisances, complaining of the state of the closets ; a circular from the Board, referring to the conduct of election; from Mr. Simpson, architect, intimating that he was willing to prepare plans, &c, should the committee at any time require his services. The Chairman stated that Mr. Hammond would be in Akaroa to examine the school on the 11th April. Accounts to the amount of £6 14s. were passed for pay • ment, and a sub-committee was appointed to draw up a report to submit to the annual meeting, to be held on Monday next. The committee resolved to refer the consideration of the correspondence to the new members, The meeting then adjourned till this evening. Mr. Clement Lee has been appointed by the Pajea Board of Education to one of the scools in their district, and he will proceed to his duties by the s.s. Wellington, on Thursday next. During his brief stay in this district he has made many friends, and we wish him every success in his new sphere of labour.
