The competition is flat and decreasing, and quotations are on an average l-£d. to 2d. lower than at the opening. The principal decline has been in cross-bred medium and inferior—• greasy medium inferior washed, scoured. The home trade are purchasing sparingly. Continental demand is poor up to date. 150,000 bales have been sold. Captain Campbell Walker delivered a** lecture on forestry on Saturday night. The Governor presided. After furnishing his report to Government, he leaves the . colony, probably next month. Auckland, March 19. Emmett and de Lias have entered an action against the owners of the Jane Douglas for the sum of £2,000, which boat they specially chartered to convey them to Auckland in time for Emmett to catch the City of New York to fulfil start- , ing engagements in America. The steamer took horses on board, and in consequence of there being insufficient water on bar had to put back. She again attempted the bar, but put back owing to gale. Point involved whether being specially chartered, owners had right to ship horses. Heavy floods have taken place in the Mongonui district. Hundreds of sheep have been drowned, several pigs swept out to sea, and fences and bridges destroyed. William Addy was charged to-day by his wife, a schoolmistress, with using threatening language towards her. The evidence disclosed habitual drunkenness, with prolonged cruelty. Defendant was# ordered to find sureties for his future good >; behaviour, himself in £200, and two sure- : ties in £100 each, to keep the peace for •: twelve months, •'.'

Sydney, March 19. Arrived—Rotorua. March 13. J. D. D. Jackson, in writing to the Herald, contradicts Onslow's statement that a patient named Griswell, at Parra-' mata Asylum, is Arthur Orton. He says the patient has no tatoo marks on itmK; and ears not pierced as Orton's were according to Onslow's shewing.
