FROM THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Christchurch, Friday Evening. Butter, is held for Is 2d to Is 3d ; and cheese is in good supply at sid to s£d. Since our last report we have no material alteration to note in this market, except that, as harvest approaches a conclusion, greater activity is manifested. At the yards on Wednesday, 5251 sheep were penned, and biddings were not so animated as they were last week. Best cross-bred fat sheep sold up to 10s 9d, and merino wethers to 7s 9d each. A few lambs of prime quality reached 10s, whilst those of ordinary quality sold at from 5s 6dto 6s 6d Cross-bred stores in good condition sold at 7s 6d, which may be taken as the present value for this description of stock. Merino ewes, broken and failing mouths, went at 2s 3d and 2s 4d —a good price, considering that sound-mouthed sheep of the same class are only worth from 4s to 4s 6d. We quote mutton for the week at ljd per 11). The number of cattle yarded was 179, comprising the usual variety, and prices showed that a good demand for this class of stock still exists. Beef ranged from 25s to 30s per IOOIbs, leaving our quotations of last week, viz., 27s 6d per IOOIbs., to stand as the average. Of pigs, 354 were disposed of at prices ranging from 7s to 19s, according to age. Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the live stock market, &c, for the week ending Friday, March 9, 1877, as follows ,—At the market, on Wednesday last 5256 sheep. 179 cattle, and 354 pigs came forward (for the week's "supply. There was an average attendance. Biddings came slowly throughout the Sheep sale and in many cases last week's values were not realised. The cattle sale was marked with spirited competition ; all lots offered realised extreme values. Our entry for the day comprised 101 cattle, 1546 sheep, and 38 pigs. We cleared our entry at, for merino wethers, 7s 9d 7s 6d and 8s per head ; cross-bred do, 10s 10s, 6d ; do ewes, 10s. Fat lambs, 6s 6d to 10s each ; and sundry lines of stores at current rates. Outside we have disposed of several lines at market values. In cattle we sold fat light weights to £9 7s 6d per head, and stores at very full rates. The demand for all classes is extremely brisk.
