It is estimated that the population of Victoria on 30th September was 834,984 persons—being 453,345 males and 381,939 females. We have heard, says the Thnaru Herald of a good many reasons being given by persons for objecting to take an oath, but one of the most curious came underooru r notice yesterday at the Assesment Court, when one of the ratepayers refused to be sworn because it was Lent. The 'Dunstan Times' hears that Mr Pyke has commenced a criminal action against the ' Cromwell Argus' for defamation of character.
