(Per Press Agency.) London, March 7. The Porte objects to the demands of Montenegro for tlie cession of territory and seaport. Russia is still expectant. Pending the answer to her circular, she has issued an ukase, ordering the organisation of nine army corps. The Porte maintains the same confident attitude it assumed when the Conference was sitting, and is prepared to accept war in preference to prolonged suspense. On the other hand, Russia objects to the suggestion of a year's grace. Russia withdraws from the treaty of 1856, unless the other powers cooperate to obtain the acceptance by the Porte of the original programme of the Conference. On the Turkish budget, the estimate of expenditure for the present year on the army, is set down at £14,500,000 ; and on the navy, at £10,750,000. THE AMERICAN EXECUTIVE. President Hayes has nominated W. Maxwell Ewart, Secretary of State ; and Sherman, Secretary to the Treasury.

(Per Ringarooma, via Bluff ) Melbourne, March 6. In the libel action Mr. Langton, M.H.R., against the Age newspaper, a verdict was given for £1000. There were two counts : one, that the article complained of reflected on Mr. Langton as a member of Parliament; the other, as to his buisness as an auditor and accountant. On the first damages were awarded to the amount of £253, and on the second to £750. A new trial is likely to be applied for. In the action Lee Chingv. Australasian, which paper had stated that a betting Chinaman had not paid up over the last Spring meeting, the jury gave damages a shilling, and the Judge refused to certify for costs. The Chairman of Committees has referred the Berry case to his solicitors, finding that he gets no satisfaction or apology from Mr Berry for calling him a corrupt Chairman of Committees. The elections are beginning to occupy great attention. Meetings are held nightly.
