COMMERCIAL.

Akaroa, Monday Evening. Messrs Bridge and Bushel 1 on behalf of Mr Shanbolt held a sale at the Head of the Bay on Friday last, and report a good demand for cattle of all description. Sheep hardly so brisk, as merinos in forward condition were quitted at from 3s 9d to 6s 6d. The horse market is at present very dull, there being little or no enquiry. The auctioneers regret very much that the number of stock they were instructed to advertise fell so far short of that they had to offer, as many dealers who were present were unable to effect the purchases they intended. FROM THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Christchurch, Friday Evening. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. The continuous fine weather has enabled farmers to get all grain stacked, and threshing has now become general ; the markets are, however, in a very unsettled state. In wheat, transactions have been confined to millers who, through competition with each other, huve run prices 'up far beyond the reach of merchants and ■exporters. Sound samples of milling, perfectly dry and free from sprout, have touched 5s 9d to 5s lOd. At these rates exporters are quite out of the. market. Sprouted samples range from 2s 6d to 3s 6d, but stocks of this quality are beginning to accumulate, and in time must tend to reduce the price of sound samples, as flour'made from this class of grain will come into competition with the other quality at very low rates. Oats are unchanged. We quote 2s 2d for prime old milling, and Is 10s to 2s for new season's feed and milling respectively. Barley, of good colour, has been sold at 4s 6d to maltsters, and 3s upward for other qualities. Millers' quotations are £15, for fiour in sacks, guaranteed quality ; bran and sharps, nominal. Dairy Produce. —Butter has improved in value, consequent on the demand from Australia. We quote prime samples at Is per lb. Cheese is coming forward in large supply, but rates have not improved, We quote at Christchurch, as current quotation. Hams and bacon, 9|d, in cloth, f.o.b.
