PENINSULA JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

The races commenced to-day, and were, as far as racing went, excellent in every respect. The fields were good, and the various events, were well contested. Notwithstanding the gloomy appearance of the weather on the previous day, the course was very well patronised, there being between two and three hundred present at least, including an immense majority of the mounted division, and a great _ many ladies. The cavalry were greatly in excess of the infantry on the occasion, and every part of the district contributed its quoto of visitors. ' A large number of Akaroa and Christchureh residents were present. The course was in excellent good order, and in the greater part of _ the running ground the turf was elastic and in excellent condition, 'it is totally impossible for us to enter, into details of to-day's races, but promise a full report in our next issue. The following are the results of the various events:— Hurdle Race of 15. so vs. Entrance, 255. Open to all comers. Weight for age. Over 8 flights of hurdles.: Distance about 2 miles. Mr. J. H. Lunn's g.m. Phantom, 6 yrs... 1 Mr. S. Nutt's b.h. Shillalah, 6 yrs . ... 2 Mr. B. Shadbolt's b.m. Ladybird, 3 yrs... 3 Eclipse and Sour Grapes were scratched. The race-was a gift to Phantom ; the other horses being nowhere in the finish. Maiden Plate of; 10 so vs. Entrance 20. For district horses only. Weight for age. Distance about 1£ miles. Mr. J. Maritana, 6 yrs 95t... 0 This race resulted in a dead heat between Rosy Smart and Grecian Bend, but as the former horse ran outside the post; was disqualified, and Grecian Bend was adjudged first place, Black Pine second. This event was the race of the day.

Flying Stakes of 10 soys. Entrance, £1. For two-year-olds and upwards. Weight for ago. Distance about half-mile. Mr. B. Shadbolt's b.h. Eclat (imported) * 5 yrs ... • 1 Mr. B. Shadbolt's b.g. Volunteer, aged ... 2 Mr. S. Nutt's h.h. Sour Grapes, 4 yrs ... 3 This was a walk over for Eclat, Volunteer not making an effort to run, and Sour Grapes running off the course. Great dissatisfaction was expressed by the spectators at the apparent farce of this race. The result gave rise to many unpleasant remarks. Hack Race of 5 soys. Entrance, 10s. Post entries. Once round the course. This race was won by Mr. Wilson's Ake Ake in a canter. [The Stewards decided to run second day's races to-day.] Hack Hurdle Race of 10 soys. Entrance, 20s. For District Horses. Weight for age. Distance about two miles. Mr. Welch's b.g. Charley, 5 yrs ... 1 Mr. Birdling's e.g. Orlando, 5 yrs ... 2 Mr. S. Nutt's Breakneck, 4 yrs 0 Mr. H. Piper's e.g. Faugh-a-Ballah 5 yrs 0 A protest was entered by rider of Breakneck, against the other horses riding the wrong side of the post. Purse of 10 soys. Entrance, 20s. For District Horses only. Distance about 1£ mile. Mr. J. Castle's b.m. Malvenia, 3 yrs ... 1 -3lr. J. Castle's b.m. Symphony, aged ... 2 Mr. R. Little's b.m. Fanny, aged ... 3 Mr. B. Shadbolt's b.g. Black Pine, aged 0 Mr. B. Shadbolt's b.g. Volunteer, aged... 0 This was almost a neck and neck race between Malvenia and Symphony, Fanny a good third.
