■ ' 0[Special to the Mail.] Dunedin, February 22. Entries for Dunedin and Port Chalmers Regatta closed last night; they promise to be very numerous. A public meeting consisting of about 70 persons was held last night about Macandrew's testimonial. Influential Committee was appointed to carry out the. object in view. At a Committee meeting of the Otago Licensed Victuallers' Association yesterday, it was unanimously resolved to appeal against the decision of the Resident Magistrate, in the case of Police against Jenkins, as to whether the ordinary mode of payments for use of billiard table be constituted gambling. Greymouth, February 22. The All-England match was resumed at 1 p.m. to-day. Newton and Cresswell went to the wickets, and were quickly followed by nine others, making the score with wides, &c, only 30, when time was called. Wellington, February 22. Avaunt, barque, arrived from London,lo7 days out, a fine weather passage. She brings a portion of the cable required to finish the second cable across Cook's Straits. She also brings 32£ statute adults. Two adults died on the voyage. Hokitika, February 22. His Excellency the Governor and suite arrived in camp shortly after one o'clock, and was received by the staff and representatives drawn up in line. The flanks wheeled inwards when his Excellency addressed the competitors. After lunch, which was provided for the Governor in the staff tent, the carbines fell in and marched to the range. By the time His Excellency arrived, all was in readiness for moving. Target match then commenced, the result being: Blake, A.C., 47; Muir, Dunedin, 39 ; Rose, Auckland, 38 ; Lang, Oamaru, 37. The shooting in the cast-off of some competitors was very rapid, as many as nineteen and twenty shots having been fired in the two minutes. The rest then fell in to compete for the fourth match. The prize winners are : Richardson, 71, Archeson, 71; Paynter, 70; Smith, 69 ; Haslett, 69 ; Anderson, 68 ; Ballinger, 68 ; Murray, 68. A large number of visitors were on the ground. Weather very fine. Ground drying rapidly. Glass rising.
[Per Submarine Cable.] Sydney, February 22. Sailed—Rotorua. London, February 20. February wool sales opened. Total 268,000 bales, catalogue of which 94,012 were offered. Port Philip wool preponderated. The large attendance of home and foreign buyers ruled the prices one penny lower. February 21. Lord Derby has informed the Porte that although the English Government will not coerce the action of Turkey, it will not feel bound to protect the Porte against the Coercion of other powers. The Secretary for India and Earl Beaconsfield both expressed themselves as opposed to policy of Coercion.
