INTERPROVINCIAL TELEGRAMS.

[From the Press Agency]. Auckland, February 16. Sterndale, of the schooner Canterbury, ■was arrested at the suit of Henderson and McFarlane for £1000, said to have been incurred under a partnership agreement. The claim, arises out of an action to wind up the partnership. The arrest was made upon the sheriffs warrant, applied for on the ground of Sterndale leaving the colony. Proceedings have been began againet the captains of cutters for carrying passengers without a license. Another case of breach of the Licensing Act broke down to-day for want of evidence. February 17. Mr. Passmore was examined by the Bail way Commission to-day, relative to the time tables and fares. At the Theatre last night, Miss Kena, on entering with her friends, was refused admittance, not having obtained an order. She considered herself insulted, went on the stage, and insisted on her husband, Maeder, ceasing playing. He left Mr. Emmet to finish the play. To-night, in consequence of this embroglio, the performance will be changed. New Plymouth, February 16. 'About two this morning a fire was discovered in the hold of the ship Himalaya, alongside the wharf. The smoke and heat were so great that it wae impossible to go down the hatches to work, and an entrance was effected to the after hold, where the fire was by breaking through the cabin. For several hours there were fcur streams of water kept playing into the hold before the final extinguishment of the fire. The ship's watchman was picked up dead below. It i* supposed that h* fell down the hatch, and then got smothered. Two men of the Central Brigade weTe aleo picked up senseless in the hold from suffocation, but they recovered. A great portion of the cargo has been

landed, but it is impossible at present to estimate the damage, which, must be considerable. After careful examination of the hold of Himalaya,to ascertain the cause of the fire, the balance of opinion is in favour of spontaneous combustion amongst a quantity of straw, in which a portion of the cargo was packed. ' Nelson, February 16. The match was resumed at 11.30, but most of our men failed to make a stand against the splendid bowling of Hill and Shaw, and were all out but two for 56, of which 15.were byes and 4 leg-byes, Halliday and Barnett made 8 each ; Cross and Wiggin, the latter a young boy, 6 each. Shaw bowled nine wickets and Hill four. The lunch adjournment then took place. Our team then went to the wickeis at three o'clock for the second innings, and by half-past four were all out for 39. Emmett bowled instead of Hill, and his left-handers did terrible execution, as did Shaw's slows. The largest scores were—Cross, 7 ; Silcock, 6 ; and Levien, 5; byes and leg-byes, 8. February 17. The Rev Mr Selwyn, the newly-elected Bishop of Melanesia, is to be consecrated here to-morrow morning. Riverton, February 16. The steamer Halcyon has completely broken up, not a vestige of her ie to be Been, except some portions of timber and cargo, which have been washed ashore. None of the cargo was insured. The vessel is insured in the National Insurance Company for £400, and in the South British for £200. Timabu, February 9..
