I did not canvas because the g.'iitlemcn nominated at the same time as myself had an equal interest with me in the advancement of our district, and I should have therefore been content to have found myselt at the bottom of the poll. As, however, you wish me to act, I shall endeavour to carry out the duties of a Trustee to the best of my ability. You are aware that these mainly consist in obtaining a reliable report as to the best means of draining Lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth, and of bringing a line of railway from the Plains to Akaroa Harbor. I hope that His Excellency the Governor, with whom it rests, will name an early day for the first meeting of the Trust, as it would be a great object if possible to have the report and survey laid before Parliament at its next Session.
