AUSTRALIA.
(Per Kingarooma, via Bluff ) • The weather continues extremely dry, and is very disasterous to pastoral and agricultural interests. There has not been an inch of rain registered for the past six weeks. Sheep are dying in all directions. There have been numerous bush fires. The Cable Conference closed its sittings. New South Wales, and Victoria and South Australia together agreed on the duplication of the line between Singapore and Banjocwangie, which will cost each £9000 a year in excess of present amount. This arrangement has not yet been ratified by the respective colonies. It will be arranged to obtain English operators on the •Dutch lines if the Netherlands and Indian (iovenunents will sanction it. A man named Sheriff, who recently died, served against the Maoris in the Bay of Islands in 1841. . * Political matters are quiet, but numerous candidates are announced. The Education question is likely to prove the great bone of contention at the election.
