AKAROA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Tuesday, January 24, 1877.] [Before J. Aylmer, Esq., R.M.] CATTLE AT LARGE. J. F. Roberts was charged with permitting two cows and a calf to wander at large. Fined 10s and costs. A Rodrigues was charged with allowing a horse to wander at large. Fined 5s and costs. ASSAULT. W. Glover charged E. Haines with assaulting him on the 5th January, at Garwood's House on the Hill Top.

From the evidence it appeared that complainant and a man named Davy were engaged playing a game of euchre, when the latter lost, and threw down a half-a-crown in payment of the drinks. The complainant was observed by defendant to take the coin up and deposit it in his waiscoat pocket. On being accused of concealing the money, he denied the imputation, and proceeded to turn out his pockets, when Davy espied the half-crown in one corner of complainant's pocket, and thereupon proceeded to administer a reproof. In the scuffle complainant got Davy down, and was in the act of " booting " him, when defendant interfered. A witness named William Simpson swore that complainant struck defendant first, when the latter retaliated in self defence. His Worship, in dismissing the case, remarked that in future the defendant must endeavour to keep his fist to himself when a quarrel arose, as the repetition of such conduct would endanger all chance of his getting a transfer of the license. The Court then adjourned.
