TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —In your issue of Tuesday last I saw you were rather rough on our " Worthy Mayor,"but why you want to sling those foreign words (I forget exactly what they were, as I have mislaid the copy of your paper containing them), but I think you called him |a participle criminis or something of that sort, whatever that may mean. If you want to call him a duffer, or anything of that sort, please do it in English, so that we all can understand it and join in the joke, and you will oblige us, the UNEDUCATED. [For the information of our correspondent we would explaiu that particeps criminis is applied to an accessory either before or after the fact; and also to one who allows another to commit an offence without informing against him.—Ed. A.M.]

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —At a meeting of the County Council to-day, a great deal has been done in the way of information. The members seemingly are ignorant, not having all the Acts at hand, but they are going cautiously to work. One would almost think that the Council is entirely composed of Scotchmen. They are in general cautious how they give expression to their views, and as there are exceptions to most rules, we have it here in the shape of one of its members. Did you hear, as I did, that one member, being a chainman to a Road Board, objected to have the Bill in its entirety, as it did not deprive the Road Boards of the money in the way of grants, but only deprived the County Council of something like £10,000 a-year. Now, sir, is it doing justice to this district that since this amount will not come through the Road Board's hands, that the Council is to be deprived of it. Surely you will take a note and have a leader on this point.—lam,&c, A RATEPAYER.
