Edwin Wadman, late clerk to Heathcote Road Board, has been committed for trial for embezzling certain sums of money amounting to about £70, which belonged to the board. Total defalcations amount to over £500.
Very heavy rain fell for several hours last night, flooding streets in various places. Reports from southern districts show that Rangitata and Orari rivers overflowed, doing considerable damage to railway line and property.
The heavy rain last night has made ground soft for interprovincial cricket match. The game was resumed at 12.45 by the two Dunedin men " not out," Rose and Clark, Wilson bowling slow, Ashby fast Score was run up to sixty-one, when Rose was foolishly run out when attempting to steal one for hit to mid-off. Protest entered against Eclipse for junior race yesterday, on ground she had two champion pullers. Yacht Secret also protested on ground not to complete race because not sufficient "water on course laid out by committee.

London, January 14, Floods in England are subsiding. January 16,
European Powers have virtually abandoned proposals, which have been rejected by representatives of Porte, except that which relates to the appointment of International Commission. Porte remains obdurate. The statement that German Delegates expressed ©pinion that further concession towards Turkey was impossible, is officially denied. Marquis of Salisbury communicated with British Government as to final prospects of negotiation on the part of the Conference. Envoys insisted upon Governors of Provinces being subject to approval of powers for next five years, but agreed to substitute mixed European and Ottoman commission for proposed international commission. It was understood that unless these terms were accepted, all delegates would leave Stamboul and return to their respective countries. Turkish delegates replied that they thought it impossible that terms would be accepted, but they would refer to their governriient for authoritive reply. Time to do this was granted, Council been convoked to decide upon matter. Expect answer would be given on Thursday. Sydney, January 17. TheTararua sailed for Hokitika with English cricketers to-day. The Albion left Melbourne for Bluff to-day.
