(TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL). Sir, —I noticed in your last issue a letter re the price of bread. I think if the thing is fairly looked into it will be seen at once that it is reasonable enough, considering the difference in price of flour between here and Christchurch. In Christchurch it is quoted at £16 the ton, and the baker's get 9d the 41b loaf. Here it is £18 to £20, And the 41b loaf 10d, so it will be seen that the Christchurch bakers actually make more out of it than our local baker. Another thing which I think is a great consideration, is, that in Christchurch it is mostly sold for cash or weekly accounts, whilst down here it is sometimes six or twelve months before the people think of paying their little bills. If cash transactions had been the order of the day, we might still have had two bakers in Akaroa, so that the people have only themselves to blame. It is high time there were a change in the system of trading in Akaroa, the old style of "Pay for it when you can" should be done away with, and everything should be sold for cash. Then the storekeepers, butchers, and bakers could afford to sell at a much smaller advance, and the people themselves gain by it in the end. Hoping ithese few remarks will be accepted for wJiat they are worth.—l am, &c, FAIR PLAY.
