Auckland, January 9. The Auckland Volunteers intend to present a testimonial to Major Gordan. The Eev J. Cross, of Sydney, has refused a call from the Presbyterians of Kemuera, Auckland. The Thames oarsmen to compete at the Nelson Regatta, left by the Hawea. Fifty-one representatives were present, and thirty-two visitors. The Grand Chief Templar's annual report was satisfactory. At the meeting of the Eden County Council to-day, Dr. Wallis moved that the third schedule of the Act be not brought into operation. An amendment for adjournment till to-morow week was caried. The trial of Curtin, for the murder of Denis Shanaghan is proceeding. Mrs Shanaghan gave evidence to the effect that two months before the murder she and a girl named Annie M'Donald, on their way from church, went into Curtin's and had tea.

At the meeting of the Waste Lands Board, a letter from Mr. James Mackay, enclosed returns of 791,433 acres at the Thames, under negotiation. The lands actually acquired, consisted of 31 blocks, comprising, 277,867 acres ; and of this, 226,610 acres have been transferred to the Board. The Board passed a resolution, requesting the Governor to place under its administration, all lands, the purchase of which was completed at the Thames. A telegram Was read from Mr. Broomhall, approving of the conditions offered by the Board, excepting a few minor points, on which he promised to write fully. The question was postponed. Letters were read from Mr. Pritchard, approving of the terms proposed, subject to approval of the Association in England ; and from the Under-Secretary for Crown Lands, transferring to the Board the Patutuhi Block, of 20,000 acres, at Poverty Bay. January 10.

Curtain was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Mr. Eees, for the defence, called Annie M'Donald, who had heard Shanagan threaten to kill Curtain. She had seen him driving prisoner's cattle eight months ago. Curtain went to Shanaghan's house, and Shanaghari chased him away.' John Parr, settler, deposed that Shanaghan had made threats against prisoner. They frequently quarrelled. At the meeting of the Grand Lodge of the 1.0. G.T., a letter was read from the Hon. W. Fox, apologising for nonattendance. It was resolved to send a telegram regretting their inability to send a delegate to the Right Worthy Grand Lodge of America. On considering the protest of the Wellington Lodges against holding the Grand Lodge at Auckland, the Committee upheld the action of the Executive. The report was adopted. A long debate ensued on the negro question. The report recommended the admission of the negro on equal footing. Eesolutions were passed disapproving of the action of the Right Worthy Grand Lodge of America and affirming that there was no necessity for allegiance to it.

The Daily Times of this morning states: " We hear on good authority that Lieuten-ant-Colonel Maule, .of the armed constabu lary, although-the appointment has not yet been gazetted, is the gentleman chosen to fill the office, of Chief Commissioner of Police for the Colony; also that th# present Commissioners for Otago and Canterbury will be appointed Assistant Commissioners and "Inspecting Superintendents, one for each, island.

The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland met last night. The Rev. Mr. Gow, of St. Andrew's Church, was elected moderator, and delivered the usual opening address. Cleolite was scratched for the Dunedin Cup at 10 minutes to three this afternoon. Hokitika, January 8. Mr. Henry Young has purchased Learmonth and Pasty's six hundred acre lease at Mount Rangitoto, for £500 cash and £5000 in paid up shares on the formation of the company. The lease adjoins the prospectors mine, and is called the New Zealand Silver Mining Company, to be registered under the Joint Stock Companies' Act, 1860. Capital, £40,000, in 8000 shares of £5 each. The promoters, fifteen in number, reserve 2000 paid up shares and £1000 cash, on the formation of the company. Mr. Young has engaged the services of the original prospectors, and starts for the mine in a few days.
