"We expect a considerable number of the Maoris next Market-day from the Otamatea •with beef, kumeras, potatoes, &c. We are- , informed that they intend holding a korero with the Pakehas on the events of the day, and that Paikia, Emara and Adam Clarke the principal chiefs of the Kaipara with the Rev. . Mr. Gittos and others will be of the company. "We are informed that a-Runanga was held at the Otamatea a few days ago on account . of the Rotoruas who have been digging gum about here lately, being wishful to acquire a locus standi in this neighbourhood. Adam Clarke on behalf of Paikia, made a very patriotic speech, declining to allow this unless they would become their servants, but urged rather that they should return, to their own country, leaving their arms and ammunition behind them. To this the.Rotaruas objected and'have agreed to serve the Qtamateas as: their slaves, digging, gum and planting potatoes, &c. till the close of the war.
