PUBLIC MEETINGS

Settler's Meeting.—On. last Market day there was but a limited attendance, which may be partly accounted for by the absence of several who were then working at a distance. Mr. Judd was called to the chair, after which the Minutes of the last meeting" were read and confirmed on the motion of Messrs. Edger and Worker.

After a conversation it was resolved (on account of the limited attendance,)

" That the question as to the formation of a Board of Management be postponed to next meeting." —Worker and Judd. , Dr. Bell reported that no reply had yet been received from Mrs. Steel respecting the library books, Mr. Haines had promised to send those he held but had not yet done so. The Secretary stated that he had written to Mr. Eussell, explanatory of affairs up here, and also to the Superintendent, asking1 for work for those requiring it. He had received a reply from the former^gentleman, but as ther*

, letter was a private one, he only read these { words, " I have shown your note to tho Sufc*Wintendent of the province. .He haspromii sed to get'some-roads made, and thus givo '> employment to the people." No reply had b been received from the Superintendent. He L" had also received a note relative to the loan, V enquiring the position of the lands intended L as-security. Ho had replied. I Mr. Johnson said there was a strong feolmg I' concerning fencing in the township, on ac~ f, count of the cattle straying over gardens and \\ destroying them. Ho had expected others to \\ be present who had complained to him, but t he felt strongly on the subject himself; only If the previous day he had suffered considerably l^from this cause during his absence, and from Kno neglect of his own, having fenced three ■hides of his allotment, the other belonging to Wan absentee. A long talk followed, Messrs.B Worker and Edger urging the formation of a BTown Board to take cognizance of this and Jr similar matters, a feeling which seemed to be I shared by most present. I Mr. Edger gave notice that next meeting I he would propose the formation of an ArbiI tration Board for the purpose of settling dis- \ putea. Mr. Johnson will suggest a plan for B a Town Board at the same meeting. B; Dr. Bell, as Librarian, wishes all persons ■ having Library Books in their possession, to B\leave them at the office of this paper. B A number of Maoris were present and staV ted through Dr. Bell, who acted as interpreP. ter, that they were quite willing to come to . m the market with produce, but could not get ■ anything to eat, there being no accomodation Mtfor them, and they had not been met in this with the cordiality.they wished. P» The Secretary read the following minute |\' passed by the Trustees, to show that they had their wishes: ■ ""< " Resolved—That the Secretary make enB quiries of the Maoris, as to the cost of erectB» jtog' a Whare on the Market Place, ( for the ■'' joint use of the Maori and for meetings,) the W shape to be a quadrangle of 3 sides, each side ■ open to the front or inner side, and to be 30ft R Uong, 12ft broad, and 7ft high. Also of one B ' side only." ■ Soloman their spokesman, did not like the W I idea of the place being a Whare, and after a B^.longish korero the Maoris agreed to pay half Bnthe cost of a wooden erection of the kind.and ■ proposed. > The subject was understood m to be deferred till next market day. ■ A Ballot took place for choice of Suburban B lois, there being five applications for 5 acres ■ each; the decision was as follows : 1. Wor- ■ ker, 2. Judd, 3. Chapman, 4. L. Edger, 5. J. B Beecroft. The meeting was then adjourned. Trustees' Meeting.—A meeting was held Sept. 23d, when the secretary was instuctto request the Superintendent to reserve westerly^bluff for a Market Place ; orderWm ed a plan of the three sec tions (Town Lands) 81. to be made in extenso, showing the situation; ■l of all allotments, the suburban lands, &c., s 81l also a copy for the use of a Town Agent.
