NEWSPAPERS.
The Postmaster-General, in consequence of continued complaints, has found it nece3* sary to re - issue the following notice, which first appeared in February, 1844 ; To all Postmasters, Sub-Postmasters, Letter Receivers, Letter Carriers, or any other persons employed in the Post-office.—General Post-office. —The complaints on the subject of missing newspapers, stated to have been committed to the post, continue to be so numerous, that, although the Postmaster-General is satisfied that much of the irregularity complained of arises from causes altogether beyond the controul of the Post-office, bis Lordship thinks it expedient that every persci* engaged in the Post-office service should be made acquainted with the 32nd section of the Act, -Ist Vic., cap 36, by which it is provided—“ That any person employed in the Post-office who shall steal, or shall for any purpose embezzle, secrete, or destroy, or shall wilfully detain or delay in course of conveyance or delivery thereof by the post, any printed votes of proceedings iu parliament, or an/ printed newspaper, or any other printed paper whatever, sent by the post, without covers, or t Q covers open at the sides, shall iu England and Ireland be guilty of a misdemeanour, and iu Scotland of a crime and offence, and beiug convicted thereof shall suffer such punishment by fine and imprisonment, or by both, as to the Court shall seem meet.” And his Lordsbip further desires it to be distinctly understood that every individual acting in auy capacity in the service of the Postoffice who shall be guilty of such offence, will be prosecuted with the utmost rigour of the law.
