THE MILITIA.

We believe it was the intention of the Governor, to have disbanded the Militia corps, but the recent events at i Heki’s pah, have changed this purpose to that of recruiting; aud we are given to understand, that 2s. 6d. a day will be given to efficient volunteers for active service. By the time we go to press, it is expected that at {east fifty dashing fellows, under the command of Captain Atkins, an efficient soldier, and our gallant compatriots. Capt. Wright, of the Tamaki, and F. Merriuaan, Esq, Solicitor, of Auckland, who Isolds the rank of Lieutenant, will have proceeded to the seat of war. Captain O’Connell, son of Sir Maurre. Commander-in chief of the Mili - tary Forces in the southern colonic A proceeds to Sydney, fur additional troops and artillery. On Thursday last, William Riley, private in the Ride corps of the Militia service, who died of his wounds since the battle, was buried in Auckland cemetery with military honours. Captain James Stuart Freeman, of the Militia service, of Auckland, has resigned his commission, in compliance with the expressed expectation of the public and his fellow militia men. We have not heard that any complimentary farewell letter has been written upon this occasion, after the strange example of the highest quarter—on the contrary, we believe that preparation was beingmade to compel his removal, when he very wisely “ walkedjdown stairs .”
