We had last week to record the demise of the Auckland Chronicle, and now the Southern Cross has disappeared from our political and domestic horizon The instant suddenness of tins discon tinuance is attributed to various causes; j to wit -The trustees of the absent pro prietor do not feel comfortable under the losing outlay of its weekly publication, and we have heard that its subscribers were very seriouslv failing oil' in consequence of the great discrepancy between the opinions of the nmd and gentlemanly Editor, who avowed bis authorship, and ti>e coarse persona ities of a certain party who assumed the dictation of the journal, under anonymous protection. The Auckland Times was first: published oti the sth ol September, 1842, and has been steadfast in its indepen dent course ever since ;-at least we hope S',>; and we believe it may not be saying too much to add- under no ordinary difficulties. The purposes of a public journal (if honest) will be sufficient to ensure its continuance in a British community, though ever so young. The Auckland Times, having been the earliest, is now as manifestly the survivor of all its competitors, but we would only draw this inference that it now becomes more than ever necessary that our subscribers and correspondents should take their part in the expression of public opinion. The columns of the Times continue open, most free y, to general expression, and the Editor trusts that public generosity will not leave upon his shomders alone the heavy responsibility of setting forth the urgent necessities and bitter grievances of this unhappy Colony at tue present crisis.
