We have been favored with information, received by the Himayta, lately arrived at Taranaki, that the condition of trade in Calcutta and other parts of the East Indies is deplorably bad—stagnant as in Sydney. The surest indication of the extensive realitv of the fact, is the price at which freight from Calcutta to England is quoted, viz., 20 s. per ton, a price which, of course, is utterly inadequate to pay the lowest wages of a ship’s company ; without wear and tear, interest upon capital, or anv remuneration to the owners. It is probable, that steam communication has much to do with the depression upon the older shipping interest.
