Auckland Times. Tuesday, Jan. 30th, 1844.

The present Humber closes the first quarter of our renewed publication of the Times , —and we have reason to be grateful for a more efficient encouragement than, considering the circumstances of the Colony, we could have hoped for ; at all events, \Ye do not see the utility of “grumbling and growling,” —a practice which «e declare to be foreign to our “ graceful" nature We have endeavoured to make our pages a faithful record of passing events, and shall continue to do so ; but we must say, that we cannot help feeling that the Colonists themselves are apathetib in the matter. During the past quarter the amount of “ original correspondence ” offered to us has been very small ; our pages are open to manly and temperate discussion, from all parties, —and it will be particularly gratifying to us, if, during the ensuing months, we may be honoured by being made the vehicle of separate and individual expressions of public opinion. We hope we may say, without being ungracious, that at the present period of the maturity of the Colony, we value our usefulness rather as a recorder of proceedings for the information of fhose who are watching our progress els where, than as a journalist who can furnish constant entertainment, or dictate to public political feeling here. The arrival of Captain Fitzroy was expected to produce some effects more immediately and definitely advantageous to Auckland ; but we must all confess that his absence at Wellington has been indis-pensible,--and we will hope on his return, very soon to see that he produces for our benefit a large portion of that change, which we ail give him credit for a desire to create.—And so —Allons ! Of course it is needless to say —we shall be obliged by punctual payment of accounts, and by an accession of subscribers.
