TO CORRESPONDENTS.
We have the honor to acknowledge, from the Rev. J. B. Petit Jean, the receipt ot a letter 'which would fill half-a-dozen M angles, and which therefore of course we cannot publish. In this we are invited to a public controversy upon the merits of our respective creeds- i piece of inountebankism that we be*; leave respect tally to decline. We dare to say that, in reality, there is but little difference of opinion, as Christians, between us, and thjtXw tie we have no desire to aggravate by disputation ; but we wish especially to rfemiud our reverend correspondent of the fact, that a very gross slander has been put upon the Sheriff, and sundry bare-hiced falsehoods ha\e been given to the world, — he was called upon to disavow these abominable deviations from Christian feeling and conduct : ihe reverend gen* tlemati—in a tetter that would almost till the London Times has not found r >oui to exculpate himself from die suspicion ol being the author of the baseless Vision of—“ The three catholic sailors in icons.” —1 ill he does so we decline his acquaintance in an}' shape. We leave the whole matter m the hands of the Sheriff, who has a pretty strong grip, and will no doubt take effective steps to protect his own honour and reputation.
