We have been applied to, to ask a question, which we really wonder has not been " popped" before : fFhat has become ot the monies subscribed for a monumental testimony ot regard to the late Captain Symonds, R.N.? k large sum was written, and a
considerable one wau collected ; and those who have paid would like to have their money returned, seeing it is so long ago asthei3th December, 1841. that the collection was made, and as yet nothing at all has been done. This is a Colonial fashion, not a little to be reprobated : it would sadly disarrange old-fashioned I peoples notions of honour and honesty, it tlx j v would analiJ&e a good many ol these frequent out- : breaks of 'patriotic, benevolent and public-spirited teeling. fVe are happy to record the return Of Messrs. &llafron, etc., from their tiip, which it seems was only prolonged by adverse breezes. It is somewhat un-gra« cious that they should feel offend* ed at the general anxiety displayed upon their behalt—for. if some serious accident had really belallen would have been considered very blameable that no enquiry had been made. Mr. Hart has kept his promise to his friends and the public. The Exchange Hotel has been re-opened in a style which will establish tor him the credit of despising Colonial practices and competing with English com? forts. It any body doubts our word, let him try for himself, and choose one o'clock—it is the time for the Turtle soup J
