IMMIGRANT MEETING.
It is probable we should have said no more upon the subject of the immigrant meeting held last week, because we hardily believe that any good can come of doing so, as far as the emigrants, whom we a re sincerely desirous to serve, are concerned, but some observations in the last Chroaicle, which are evidently too sprightly to proceed from either the legal or nominal editor of that paper, provoke us to publish the remainder of the remarks which want ot room wouid not allow us to print last week. Out of the forty immigrants, or thereabouts, who were present,
more than halt are in good employment ; among the rest we noticed bur own brickmaker who is earning three to four pounds per week; and we heard une man, who said he had a wife and one child, declare upon the ground, in answer to the enquiries ot a gentleman who probably would have employed him, that* he would uot go into the*country for such a low remuneration as twenty pounds wages per annum, with rations and house tor himself and family. We hope that the good sense of the colonists, supported by the practical knowludge of the immigrants them* selves, will preveut any outbreak of such stupid nonsense as chartism here: no occasion k)T it ex* ists. This demonstration, how* ever is one ot the results of the Governors going abroad and locking up the treasury chest, by which the road contract is suspended, and thereby some dozen or thereabouts of the least estimable of the Scotch immigrants are thrown out of work. We little expected to see the Government organ mangling its master so completely ; but without using m< re <• dog latin" we may say to the Chronicle that we are fairly puzzled to know what that respectable journal is about. VVewill be happy to meet him at all points : Velirrv. nolim. QuGßdam est tuenda sententia. --Cic« The chairman and promoters of this meeting—but we will not say any thing harsh—they will see their error.
