WELLINGTON.
(From the Independent.)
The steamer Wonga Wonga, Captain Kennedy, returned to port on Sunday morning last, from Aorere via Whanganui, after a run of 14 hours from the latter port. We were in hopes of being enabled to give an authentic description of the diggings by this opportunity; but really the reports are so various and contradictory, that we are at a loss in arriving at the truth of the matter. Some letters that have been received give a most glowing account of the diggings, and s‘ate that the miners are generally doing well; while others are of the most gloomy and desponding description, the writers stating that they have been misled by false statements, and that the whole affair is a regular sell. From what we can gather, however, it would appear that a man has no business at the diggings unless he can keep himself for a month or two without seeing the color of gold ; that he must work during the whole of the time with the most indefatigable industry ; and that then, possibly, success may crown his efforts. The man without means, or who is unable to undergo the most laborious employment, should not go there at all. A few passengers ’-have returned by the Wonga Wonga; a number more wished to come by her, but not having the means to pay their passage, offered Captain Kennedy their promissory notes to pay on arrival here ; the Captain, however, being answerable for their passage money, did not like to take the responsibility upon himself.
