Correspondents.

Communications should bo authenticated by the name and address of the writer, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith. Our columns are open to all correspondents ; but we neither endorse tbe opinions nor guarantee the facts of any.

(To the Editor of the Auckland Examiner.)

Sir, —In tbe third number of your Journal you have admitted, while dwelling upon illustrious Irisnmen, that Ireland has given birth lo a long line of remarkable men ; that no people take a livelier interest in political affairs: that their enthusiasm is unbounded; and that their splendid eloquence has at all times exercised ever them a vast influence. All this Ido allow ; but as there are generally two sides of every argument, so there are also two sorts of Irishmen. The above class has been well styled illustrious ; but the class I would speak of, are degenerate Irishmen, who never owned qualities like those above mentioned, and never will. We have certainly also remarkable men in this class; men who take a very lively interest in political affairs; their enthusiasm is also boundless, (especially at elections) and their “ illegant” eloquence does equally astonish us. But at the same time we see these men dropping the few sterling qualities which they formerly possessed, aud assuming manners which fit them very much as a shirt would a handspike. What will this world come to? Do you know Mr. Editor ? I do’ut. Yours, &c., Lboksdas. Auckland, October I.3th, 1851.
