To the Electors of the working classes of the City of Auckland, and all whom it may concern. Gentlemen, —in the course of a few days the writs will be issued for the election of members to serve in the next Provincial Council. Lest any amongst you should incautiously promise their votes to any of the various candidates whose names have been already mentioned or published, I take the seasonable opportunity of informing you that I am in the field. Some of you may think that the office I now hold under the Provincial Government might be incompatible with the discharge of those duties which your choice is likely to- impose on , me, you need be under no apprehension on that score, I am sufficiently read in history to know that no man ever arrived at real greatness without making great sacrifices, and therefore I am prepared, should any measure be brought forward in which my engagements to my constituency might clash with my duties to the Provincial powers, in such an emergency, I am prepared to resign my office and emoluments to any person who may be blessed with a more pliable conscience than that with which I happen to be endued. I will not address jou at greater length until 1 see the addresses of others who may presume to think themselves worthy of your supports. Then I will urge my claims to your support not only on account of the services I will render the Province, but on account of services already rendered.
