THE AUCKLAND EXAMINER. Thursday, April 23, 1857. "PUBLIC GOOD." ABOUT THE BALANCE SHEET.

Time judges nothing but tries all. At a Meeting held in the Mechanics’ Institute on 13th ult., Dr. Jonah and others, who are responsible to the public for a certain very uncertain Fund called Patriotic, appointed three respectable Auckland citizens to look into and, as the phrase is, audit the aforesaid Patriotic Fund Account. These respectable citizens were to report in a month. More than a month has passed and no Report is visible. Lord Ross’s telescope might enable us to discover it; butwe unfortunately are without his lordship’s admirable invention. How is this. After so magnificent a display M virtuous indignation on part of those most deeply concerned, the public had a right to expect there would be no dilatoriness in furnishing incontestible evidence of their excellent work. Lawyers delay, and we know the reason why ; but honest men hate that spirit of procrastination which perpetuates suspicion as to the real nature of their conduct. To us the delay is not at all surprising, because we happen to know that a fair and square account of monies received on account of the Patriotic Fund cannot BE GIVEN. Quite recently a well-known citizen was written to for his subscription of £lO, and curtly told that if he did not immediately pay he would at once be posted. But he had paid—a fact his rather fast correspondent was not sensible of when addressing him. We know that one List of Subscriptions is missing—-clean gone —and so far unfindable. flow many other Lists maybe our. of the way, we are unable to declare. Perhaps the gentlemen appointed to audit will enlighten us upon this nigger-colored subject. Our demand was and is a fair Balance Sheet. If we get that we shall be content, if not -—not.
