CONSTITUTIONAL DEMONSTRATION.

Constitutionalism is progressing, and Constitutionalists are rampant. Their demonstration on Monday last, if not glorious was certainly uproarious. An unquenchable desire to make a show of themselves well nigh ruined the English Chartists. Let Auckland Constitutionalists have a care lest, like the English Chartists, they demonstrate a little too much. A few such triumphs as they gained on Monday will ruin them. At present their character as a party is not so good that they can afford to trifle with it. Their Monday evening demonstration was a meeting of the private public sort—a meeting one-sided, because unprepared to hear with equal calmness both sides. Next week we shall say our full say with regard to all parties concerned in this demonstration. At present we must confine ourselves to offering Constitutionalists a little advice. When next they demonstrate, we advise them rather to err on the side of liberality than on the other side ; and, if they must have a chairman of their own choosing, let him be one who is able to read a little plain English. This article we insist upon out of pure regard for Constitutionalists, whose respectable chairman declined to put Progress McCaul’s amendment to Constitutional Coolahan’s vesolution because he, the learned Doctor, considered that amendment, “ upon the ole” and “ as an ole,” quite unfit to put to so respectable a meeting.
